“As children, my brother and I had pets ranging from dogs and cats to pigs. One of my favorites was a parakeet named Bert. So when an editor asked me to write a book on small pet birds, I said yes without even asking when the manuscript was due. It turns out another writer had dropped out at the last minute, and I had a very tight deadline. Luckily, I had some personal experience to draw on even before I began the research."
